The Artist

Fine Artist. Arts Educator. Creative Advocate. General Contractor.

I am. Therefore, I do.

—— Vedale Hill

Vedale Hill (b. 1988, raised, lives and works in Milwaukee, WI) is a fine artist who draws inspiration from his personal perspective of an impoverished urban upbringing, which has allowed him to apply his creative skills as a pragmatic practice of culture and identity.

His work has been exhibited in museums, shows, exhibitions, and galleries across the United States, including the Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin 30/30 Americans Exhibition in conjunction with the American 30 exhibit, Art Miami, Art Basel Exhibition, and Art Chicago. He has also led various art projects and art installations nationally such as Keystone International Mural in Atlanta GA, Hoop Dreams (on the Beerline Trail) in Milwaukee WI, and MKE to MIA Project (on the Goodwall).

His work has extended beyond the canvas as he has served as a practicing teaching artist and curriculum developer for Research For Action and the Wallace Foundation. Vedale is also a co-founder and collaborator in HomeWorks Bronzeville, an artist collaborative development initiative. Since the age of 26, he has served as the youngest member of the Milwaukee Arts Board. He has also served as a board member for several community associations including the Milwaukee Artist Resource Network and The Jazz Gallery.

One of his greatest accomplishments has been the creation of Jazale’s Art Studio, a non-profit arts education community youth studio, as well as an artist and residency program for artists of color in Milwaukee, WI. Vedale holds a B.F.A. in Integrated Studio Arts from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Milwaukee, WI (2011), where he has also returned to serve as an adjunct professor of drawing. His solo exhibition at its The Wallway Gallery, where he displayed his D'usse & Adidas series has become a recognizable motif that characterizes Vedale as not only  an artist but a cultural interpreter and tastemaker in MKE.

As of 2018, multiple pieces from his mixed media Color Courts’ series have been placed into permanent exhibition in the Fiserv Forum and are included in the Milwaukee Bucks permanent collection.
